    Jersey Giants Roost

I have 3 Jersey Giant pullets. We're building the new coop for them, 6 other regular size chicks and 5 exhausting regular size hens. (so in total 3 JG & 11 regular size) My question is about the roosts. How much roost spacing do I need for the giants? If I go 3-4 rows high to accommodate the...

Jersey Giants? Barred Rock? I'm not sure on a couple. Pullets or Roos?

I ordered 5 straight run Black Jersey Giants from the local feed store, which ordered from Welp, I believe they said. Got them on May 21, so they're just over 4 weeks old. They all looked pretty much the same when we got them, but as they got their feathers in, one started looking much...

Breeding Blue Jersey Giants To Each Other

I purchased two ( supposedly female ) baby Blue Jersey Giants on March 11th. The DARK one turned out to be a male and I am wondering if he is really a Blue Jersey Giant since he looks so different from the female. Here are my questions 1) Does any one know if I breed them what they will look...

    Wanderbrook Coop

Welcome to our little coop (Le Poulailler Noir) in the Driftless region of Wisconsin. The coop is 8' x 8' with an attached 5' x 16' run and is the culmination of a year-long bliss project. The finished coop is what happens when you combine an artist (myself) with a math guy who has amazing...

    Jersey Giant eggs

So a few days ago my 6 month JG laid her first egg. As you can see it’s very cracked, and had a soft shell, but I’m pretty sure that’s normal for her first. (Or maybe she stood on it, she is pretty fat!) Here’s the second one, ithad weird spots on the top, and a weird ‘lump’ on the side. Better...

Black Jersey Giants vs White Jersey Giants

Hello, I am in the process of raising Jersey Giant meat chickens. The goal is to raise them and offer them for sale to local small farmers. I have raised the Black Jersey Giants, but not the white ones. I am interested in knowing which of the two (black/white) are more popular, and therefore...

It was a good day for chickening!

I had my ladies out for a real deal (supervised) free range session today. They are getting so big, SO fast! I just adore them. Here is my beautiful bearded lady. Sold to us as an “Americana”. I think she is vying for the spot of head chicken! They enjoyed the shade of the cherry trees...

Is Millie going to be a Jerry?

Hey friends, We have two Black Jersey Giants pullets from our local feed store. They are 6 weeks old. One has tail feathers like all of the rest of the hens and the other has pointy tail feathers. I don’t see much difference in the combs but am a total newbie and could be over thinking. I know...

    9 Week Old Rooster(s) dying

First of all, thank you to all who reply. I am fairly new at raising chickens from birth (I purchased my "older" chickens at 6 months old). Anyhow, at the end of January I received a shipment of chicks, which included 7 pullets (various breeds, one Jersey Giant Rooster as well as other white...

    Jersey Giant chicks

I have 3 chicks that are about 1 week old. I got Jersey Giants because of their docile and friendly demeanor. The chicks are so skiddish and frightened all the time. Not what I was used to with my Wyandottes and New Hampshires. Is this normal? Really worried I have made the wrong decision.

Why are Jersey Giants a rare breed?

I have one black jersey giant pullet. She is so adorable. I know professional and hobby farmers who insist on this breed being very robust, very hardy, very docile pets, layers of very very large brown eggs and excellent meat birds. Why are they so rare?
