Hello, I'd like to know if anyone here has experience with both of these breeds: Icelandic and Dominique.
Based on what I've been reading, they share a lot of the positive things that I'm looking for, but I'm having a hard time choosing which breed to go with. Based on my list below, which breed do you think would be best, and why?
- We mainly want chickens for bug control, but eggs are a nice bonus.
- We're not really looking for meat from them, but we could work up to that.
- We want broody hens that will raise up plenty of babies.
- These chickens will be free-ranged over 6 acres in northern Indiana, though roughly 2/3 of the property is woods.
- They will have a solid coop and large run in case we need to be away for a weekend, but we really want a self-sufficient flock.
- We don't need them to be lap chickens, but we'd like to be able to approach them freely and have them be comfortable with that. We have young kids, so we'd like them to feel safe and confident with our flock.
- They need to be cold hardy and also able to handle humid summers.
It seems to me that the main differences between the two breeds are:
- Icies are smaller.
- Doms are friendlier.
- Doms lay more eggs.
- Icies have variety in color.
- Icies go broody more often.
- Dom roosters are more laid-back.
- Doms are quieter.
Help! We don't want to get two different breeds and wind up with hybrid chicks. We'd like to keep lines pure. But we don't know which would be best.
