Wet feather or something else?

Hello,

Fairly new duck owner here. I acquired 5 adult females about 6 weeks ago. They did not come from the best conditions, it was overcrowded with a tiny/muddy swimming hole. They are all much thinner than the 3 drakes and 1 hen I raised, but over the past month the 2 black swedish and the 1 welsh harlequin look like they have put on weight, they are cleaner and seem happy yet terrified of me still, lol. I have 2 more females that are questionable from this group of 5.

I don't know what kind they are. They are white but much smaller than my pekin & stand a bit more upright. One has a gray bill and the other a very pale bill with spots. The one with the gray bill has prolapsed twice, but after we put the drakes in drake jail she has been ok. Over the past couple of days I have noticed the other white duck looking "dirty" and I didn't know if this is wet feather or she is molting or a combo of the two. The smelled awful when they arrived here but quickly cleaned themselves up. They have access to a pond and free range everyday from around 7am to 7pm. They go into a pen at night with the other females and the drakes separated on the other side. They have a dog house in the pen if it rains (it is not covered) but pretty much they get to be out and about all day long. They spend their days swimming, grazing and preening. But they just don't look as healthy as the other ducks. I also wonder if I need to worm the whole crew and see if that would help. I have no idea how old they are, the lady told me a year, but there were so many ducks in her pen I don't know how she'd possibly know that. And only recently did some of them start laying.

PS I am not squishing the duck in the photo, it's just really hard to take a picture and hold a duck a the same time. No ducks were harmed in the taking of these photos.

I've had 3 runner ducks for the past 2 years- one male and two females. My girls feathers look like this most of the time as well. At first I thought it was wet feather, but then I realized it's from over mating... their flight feathers can get pretty beat up from the drake sitting on them repeatedly. Our drake never has any feathers out of place Lol! Just my two cents

So happy to hear these beautiful ducks are getting a much better home

These ducks were probably over mated for awhile so good thing you have separated them
This should help the girls get their body’s back on track
My guess is they may not have had proper calcium available either abd why she is having laying issues

If it’s from over mating and caused a bit of wet feather you can bath her with dawn dish soap then dry her off. Keep her away from swimming for 24-48 hours
My girl got wet feather from my drake not giving her much breaks
I separated them where they could see each other but she could rest from him
I did the bath with a little dawn dish soap and it worked first try
She has been great ever since that was back in late nov to early December Can’t remember the exact day

Thanks ya'll for the replies. Yes the drakes are in drake jail, but we did let them out for about 30 mins for 2 nights in a row so they could get a good dunk in the pond, and they all went right for the 2 white ducks. So that would make sense since I've noticed it in the last couple of days. If we put all the females up the drakes will just hang around their pen, if they go to the pond they barely get in. We thought no harm in just 30 mins out but obviously it is enough for drakes to be drakes 😑

Any idea what breed these ducks are or are they Pekin? They are no where close to the size of my sister's Pekin hens.

My Pekin is small not much bigger then my khaki drake.
So it’s possible yes
My girl has blue eyes I’m not sure if that helps or not
My Pekin is over a year old
She is the left back duck
My Swedish babies at 7 weeks are bigger then she is

I don't believe you are squishing your ducks. Anyone who has tried to hold a duck down to take a picture would agree with me I sure. Mine do everything to get out of picture taking except bite me. If you can tell me how to get pictures on here I would appreciate it. I have white Pekins that loved to mud bathe & they are filthy. Don't preen all of that away either. Now they are brown & white HA HA
