First egg! Safe to consume?

Not expecting eggs till next month at the earliest, I was pleasantly surprised to find this one in the laying box this evening and perfectly clean. Chickens have been transitioning to layer feed less than a week and oyster shells almost two, but it seems a solid egg and well-formed.
Is this safe to eat?

I suspect the layer is the Barred Rock pictured in the background below since it seems the fastest developer (and "head hen"). But it couldn't been one of the Dominiques too, I suppose.

Why wouldn't it be safe to eat?
I'd crack it into a bowl to make sure of meat spots but it's fine.

Yes of course it is safe what makes you think it would be harmful?

Great. Thanks! Still new at this.

When we got our first egg, not knowing an better we fried it and fed it our dog, so I understand you were wondering about this.
However it looked so nice that it was a bit of a pity that we didn't eat it and we've eaten every first egg since, and they're all been delicious!

I was wondering this too. I just had the vet telling me today that I should give hard boiled eggs to my dog, particularly the older eggs.

We feed the dogs (we've got two now!) an occasional hard boiled egg, I do remember reading something that I one shouldn't feed to many, I think it was the yolks that were the problem, in that they could destroy vitamin B, or something like that.
However I don't know if this was reliable information and I've never got round to doing more research, so I'd be interested to hear more about it!

I feed any iffy looking eggs, and excess eggs, to the dogs. Shaves a little off the food bill, and the dogs get super excited any time they hear the sound of cracking eggshells.

As to the original question, yes the first egg is perfectly safe to eat. It's an old wives tale that you should toss them.

Does this include eggs with too thin a shell? I found two of those this morning... it would be nice to just toss them to the dog then throw them out.
