Welcome to Kayla’s Flock!

With the new year coming on soon, I thought I should probably make a new flock thread! In my last flock thread, new people would stop by thinking I still had the same birds from the first post; which was made back in 2018! Soo, without further ado, welcome to Kayla’s 2021 flock!

Here I will post updates and pictures and stories of my flock.

I am the proud owner of:
2 leopard geckos (Mango and Tango)
2 hermit crabs
4 betta fish
4 cats (Lucy, Spike, Chester, and Opie)
1 rabbit (Jack)
7 call ducks
10 buff Orpington chickens
10 NH red chickens
4 Cream Legbar chickens
10 Coturnix quail
And around 20 guineas.

I also have eggs in the incubator, hopefully they will hatch tomorrow or the next day.

Hi Kayla! Thought I'd pop by when I saw this!

Random question, I think I see a rooster? If so, how do you train them to be nice to you? I'm not having problems with this, but I'm...um...a little bit obsessed with roosters so...yeah.

I can't wait to see pictures of the new chicks!

Hi!

Yep, you are seeing some boys! I have 2 CL boys and 2 NH red boys! I don’t think I really have a training plan that I use. As soon as I am aware that they are roosters (when they are babies), I usually don’t handle them as much. My current roosters are pretty nice, and we keep a distance from each other. Do you do something different with cockerels/roosters? If so, I’d love to hear it!

Awesome! I sort of do the same. I have previously followed this method: A Viewpoint on Managing Roosters
But next year I think I will experiment a bit. Currently I only have one silkie rooster, I got him from a lady who raised him and his three siblings indoors to the age of around five months, then realized they were all boys. So I took him and he is super friendly to me and courteous to the hens!

Awesome! Will be sure to look at the article. She kept them inside for 5 months?? Wow. Must have been stinky!

Oh yeah! It was sort of sad, but it was obvious she loved them and didn't know any better. But I think he has turned out all the better from the pampering!

Do you breed to sell or for hobby?

I breed mostly for hobby. I do sell sometimes if I have too many cockerels or just want to thin out the flock. I breed my call ducks for fun, and I sell them. They are one of my favorites to keep. But it is a bit hard to hatch since my call hens go broody and spoil the eggs (mine try to share a nest and end up killing the eggs).

Fun! I wish I could keep as many as you, maybe I'll sneak in some more roos next year. I can imagine myself shushing the roosters as five crow at once...

Broodies, I feel you!

This year I started breeding and hatching for hobby, but in 2021 I'm going to get serious, and 2022 had better watch out!
