I pick them up from below so they stand on my hands, which is something Shad suggested I try. It's been really good but of course, is much easier at night time when they're on the roost already.
Good to know!
Just saw a German study (via the editorial I linked) that found ingested microplastics in 28 of 30 cetaceans (fellow mammals) but no clear indication of harm from ingestion.
But I'd still rather be safe than sorry.
Question: is it very bad for us?
I would have thought no or not very bad.
Next Q: is it bad for other mammals, fish, or birds?
I found an editorial of a special edition that says plastic ingestion slows growth but I haven't looked at the precise details yet.
Hey, thanks for running the thread and sharing your observations and experience!
Like Ribh, to me your chicken wisdom makes sense, so I implement what I can within my constraints and I'm sure the hens are happier because of your efforts to share and advise.
I was describing proportions not weight. Blossom considers herself much smaller than Mary, who considers herself much bigger than Blossom.
I'm sure that if the cat considered herself big enough, she'd stand up to the chook.
My hens have a special call for this purpose too. Then Mary (the biggest hen - about twice the size of Blossom, the cat) takes a few steps towards the cat to intimidate her. Sometimes Mary charges at her. The cat always runs away. Because the yard is Blossom's territory, other cats stay away.
