Thanks everyone. My aunt usually does the picking up/holding when we need to examine or treat anyone. I would love to see a pic of one of you holding a LF chicken in that manner (sometimes what I read and what I picture don’t jive). Although I end up with chickens on me often, it is usually...

What is the best way to pick up a chicken? Now I’m curious!

Took the chicks out to the run for a field trip. They are hopefully moving into the coop this weekend if we can get the flooring on! They had a great time dust bathing. 😊

Mine comes as a crumble but it’s local and fresh and organic so I will get it regardless of how it comes. 😊

The hospitals here in the US really push formula if a baby isn’t gaining “quick enough” or latching on to mom with ease. I spent 3 days fighting with all but 1 nurse so I could keep DS next to me and they wouldn’t sneak a pacifier or sugar water to mess up the difficulty I was having getting him...

I just love looking at the landscape in your pictures! (& of course, the chickens, too!)

I feel so fortunate. I found a Mennonite gentleman about 15 minutes into the country (away from TSC 20 minutes the other direction). He has 50 lbs of locally grown organic chick starter/grower, 22% protein, for only $30 if I pick up at his barn. Regular layer is $15 for 50 lbs, and organic is...

Thanks! You all are very helpful! Some baby tax:

One question, do you guys ever just throw poo filled shavings directly in a garden bed? I was thinking at the end of growing season just covering all the beds with uncomposted coop litter.

You have a beautiful flock! And Olivia is beautiful! ❤️

Oh that must be a relief! Just took a bit to sort everything out and get the kiddos used to the new routine. 😊 We are keeping the 10 unless there is a rooster. There is a batch of chicks going to the family farm as well, so any rooster will have to join that group. There isn’t much difference...

I guess there a lot of uninformed chick buyers out there. :idunno Makes total sense. We don’t have feathered feet at the family farm either for similar reasons, but with a small home flock with lots of attention & a roofed run, I figured I would give it a go. Edited to add Buff Orpington baby tax:

Ten chicks. 😊 All different breeds. We chose docile, cold hardy breeds that lay a few different colors, so hopefully I can monitor for health issues if one stops laying suddenly or has any egg laying issues that might be a clue to something going wrong. They’ll have a nice 8x8 coop for plenty of...

The wet mash has been a wonderful bribe to get them to come to my hands! They now come running to my hands instead of away from them, to see if I have anything good. 😊 Do you want her in the coop? You could put the dog crate inside if so…

One of the new chicks fell asleep in my hand! I try to feed them wet mash every day and pick them up to put them back in the brooder so they allow me to handle them without a fight if needed. Obviously this one was pretty comfortable! 😂 She’s a Welsummer named Latte.

Thank you! Shad, how do you think the deep litter run changes things vs a regular run? More nutrients and foraging within the run scratching through the compost buildup. I’m debating it…my chickens will have about 20 feet per bird in the run when I am at work…more space after but I was thinking...

Anyone have the link to Shad’s poll? I had it and can’t find it now, even after a search!

I can attest to the vitamin d deficiency. Thought I was developing depression during Covid lockdown due to tiredness and lack of motivation to do anything. Doc thought it could be thyroid so she had me go in for blood work tests including vitamin D. Minimum acceptable level at thr very lowest...
