What breed is your black chicken? I have one who looks just like her and am not sure if she's a black Orpington or something else. She may be a mix too 🤷‍♀️ she's about 8.5 months old and just started laying! Edited to say she's actually 8.5 months old, not 7.5 months.

I have the same issue right now, only I have 7 extra boys and the temps right now are -30's!! I actually feel bad that we didn't butcher them earlier as most of the cockerels have frostbitten combs and just sit in a huddle most of the day to keep warm under the heat lamps. I hate winter...

I do not think my chickens are wholly satisfied with the current weather conditions. Not really sure what I can do about it though, it's not as if I can just pack them all up and move south for the winter. 🤷‍♀️😂

Here's my chickens this morning at -22C some of them definitely huddle together. But they aren't even all on the same roosting bar when there's clearly still room up there. 🤷‍♀️ Younger chickens all pile in the nesting boxes though, make a nice mess for me to clean out every morning.

Hopefully there's enough space there that mice won't make it up. I'd think the metal would be pretty hard to climb. I hope I'm right, because I hate mice and no longer have my cats in the one side of the chicken coop to deal with them.

Yeah I'm not looking forward to the long winter ahead. Mostly because I feel bad for my chickens, cats and dogs. They all love it outside, but it's just way too cold to be out for long these days. 🥶🥶
