I believe you are right. One of the reason's I love Shadrach's threads, is that he brings up these topics. Even if we can't mimic the wild free range conditions we can make small changes to better our chickens lives, based on this model. I'll never be able to have a rooster, though.:(

Just to muddy the water more, in my extremely small sample, the chickens affinity seems to be age/familiarity related. None of them look alike, and the 2 six year olds, Harper and Nevada (EE and RIR) hang together most and the 3 yo Shelley and Louise (Java and EE) hang together the most. The EEs...

That is so awesome. You are going to tell us, though, right? All of these posts of beautiful roosters and cute chicks have me drooling. For now though, I'll have to be content with my same four girls.

I hear you about this, it is always a concern for both dog and cat food. However, I have to feed my cat anyway, I buy a high quality food for her, and I think if it's something I would give to my cat, I'd have no hesitation feeding it to my chickens too, in a pinch. After all, this article was...

My understanding is that whats called grits in the south is what the rest of us call polenta. I think that is finely ground corn, so it might make sense that is what he really meant.

Man it's hard to keep up with you all. So I'm going to jump in here to say I am totally smitten with Skeksis. When I first started with chickens I thought NNs where horrid looking. They have really grown on me, to the point of adding Showgirls to my growing want list. Now I want a Skeksis...

Ok, here's my guess. Cochin, cream leg bar and wyandotte. Some tax for Shad's amusement, as we are certainly off topic. I hope you're taking care of yourself, here's Aggies fluffy butt.

I'm game. I know diddly about breeds, but my guesses might be good for a laugh, at least.

Yay! A new coop! That should help a lot. Just don't over exert yourself too soon.

I hope you are feeling better soon Shadrach. Will you be letting Fret sit on eggs, or pulling them? More tax. My RIR , Nevada Barr. My 3rd chicken. I know most folks on here are not too keen on the breed, but I LOVE this hen. She is super friendly, calm, lets me...

Whew! I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks, getting caught up from the very beginning. All 459 pages! Quite a saga. So I guess I owe some tax. Harper Lee's fuzzy butt, and Agatha Christie (RIP) my very first two chickens. Both EEs. Harper is still with me at 6 yrs old
