  • I catch these baby possums and hold them by the scruff, and say "Aww, how cute. Look at those teeth." Then I see your profile picture. And you're holding that thing by the scruff and doing, "Aww, how cute. Look at those teeth."

Those possums I catch suddenly seem very small....

This isn't the biggest, either. They don't want to bite; I've put my shoe in their mouths and they have never bitten down at all. I spanked this one and told it if it came back, I'd keep its head. I haven't caught it again since.

Whoa. Wait, you dare do that? You must have thick shoes. Well, I don't know how ticks are in your territory, but here, possums are wanted (just not in my coop). They eat 2,000 ticks in one night!

I wear steel toed shoes because I drive tractor trailers, so they don't have much chance of piercing them. I knew about them eating ticks. They are omnivores and will eat just about anything they can catch including mice, lizards, frogs, crickets, chicks and eggs. I have a friend who keeps two as pets; they're really clean and cuddlebugs if you raise them from tiny possumlets as if they're housecats.
IS THAT A POSSUM?! .

    I'm impressed!.

I caught one that was about another 6" longer and heavier in the body. They're really easy to handle; I just pull them by the tail then grab it by the back of the neck. They're reluctant to bite and tend to just make noise.

I will confess that I never realized it was you and an opossum in this picture. I'm going to blame the fact that your username is Coop's dad, and the profile pic is small so unless I were to enlarge it I couldn't see it well. I literally thought it was you with your arm around a little kid! 🙈

I guess it does kind of look like that!🤣
That is an enormous possum. Is that as big as they get in Texas?

This is a middle sized one. The one before this one was big enough to ride.

LOL yes. Still is. I literally spanked her, told her she was a bad possum and I'd take her head off if I caught her again. She waddled off towards the neighbors.

That's hilarious! Let's hope the neighbors don't have any dead chickens... lol!

The neighbors have no chickens. Their dog killed all theirs and then killed all ours; in order to encourage him to keep his dog off my land, I had to promise that I'd shoot his dog if it came back. Since then, the dog has stayed away and our replacement flock is north of 50 layers right now.

That, and the possums I've encountered have not gone for our chickens, just the eggs, water and leftover feed.
