Quail that stay in African Plains in winter immigrate to middle east or Europe and spend their spring and summer there before moving back to Africa each year.

Catching Quail by net has been an ancient tradition in Middle east and still is a very active way of hunting in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran.

It is quite simple.

You spread an invisible thin nylon net over the crop or wheat field ( the net is usually round with 10 to 20 feet diameter ).

Then you mimic the matting call of a female quail and repeat it until one or more male start to sneak closer to the sound to mate . When they are underneath the net you suddenly make noise and the male quail trying to fly is caught by nylon net over its head .

The call used to be made by Mallard head skin but these days everybody has a smart phone and uses the phone as the call.

In this way you only catch male quail so the population is not seriously affected by removing some of the males of an area.

After catching some quail they normally eat them or if they are sportsmen they release them or keep some of them in hanging cages for their annoying call ( which they apparently enjoy listening to) or they fight each other( very much like cock fighting in an small arena with lots of gambling involved.
