As always, locking up the hens tonight I always do a head check. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…. Thinking to myself, one hen is a little broody, but where’s the other. As I open the egg hutch to my devastation, my hen is laying on the coop floor and she’s gone. 7, 8 (but 8 isn’t alive). As I find all of my other hens doing just fine I’m trying to figure out what happened, how this could happen. They have plenty of food, fresh water in various spot in the yard. Unfortunately living in the south, we have the heat, and I do believe that she just couldn’t handle it this summer. Worst is summer isn’t over yet. I think she may have died over night, but I don’t usually do a headcount in the morning. I guess from now on, I’ll be doing a head count in the mornings from now on and a health check as well. Plus going to try to get a fan to help circulate the air more too. RIP Dilffy girl….
