skunk smell

I decided to move my coop and make it bigger. But the project is taking a bit longer than I had anticipated, so, the coop is still not fully enclosed. This evening, when I went to add food and change the water out, I surprised a baby skunk. 22 years living here (spouse has been here for 30) and have never seen a skunk. Joy. Now the exterior run area of the coop has a skunk smell, and my hens are afraid to go inside. I have a plethora of household and orchard chemicals at my disposal, but what works best at getting that miserable smell out of wood?

Now on my day off, instead of cleaning the house, I'm going be scrubbing a coop and hoping that I'll get some use out of my CZ-550. ~sigh~

Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda does an AMAZING job of removing skunk smell from dogs ..... I'm not sure about wood .....

My dog met his first skunk a couple months ago. My entire yard reeked for about 4-5 days. The fart kitty is still hanging around, aerating my lawn hunting grubs. The smell fades quickly if it's just nearby. I try to use my nose before rounding blind corners.

I didn't treat anything but the dog since their encounter was at the edge of the woods. Peroxide and baking soda shampoo helped a ton, but it took one outside bath with that, 4 washes with skunk shampoo, and a few regular shampoo baths before I could stand to let him back on his beloved couch. His hair was 1980s crunchy fried, and he still stinks a bit when wet -.-

If you have a dog or cat at home I recommend keeping some skunk shampoo on hand. And wash ASAP.

Spread some cayenne pepper powder around or make a spray out it.Spray the wood and plants around the run and coop.It'll deter predators until you're done.It even works to deter coons and weasels.I had a digger this week trying to get under my run so I spread it all around and they haven't been back.You have to respray or spread it ever so often.

I checked the apron around the bottom of the run today to make sure nothing has tried to dig in and happy to report there's been zero activity! Unfortunately every time I put cayenne pepper powder out for them I get it on me lol
