I've only had silkies for almost a year and I currently have 2 that I raised myself. I did everything the same with my standard chickens, and in planning to get silkies, I read they dont roost so I made a coop out of a dog house, with a couple roost bars 2" and one 6" off the ground, for them and expecting them to prefer sleeping on the floor.
Nope.
These two girls will fly up 3 or 4 feet to roost ON the house or ON a gate nearby. I've spent months trying to "teach" them to go inside but EVERY night, if I don't put them in before nightfall, they're perched right outside the house.
I tried introducing them to the big coop, thinking maybe if they saw the big girls doing it they'll learn, too.
Nope.
I've read countless that "they dont perch" or "they'll eventually get the hint"
Nope.
The only time they go in by themselves is if the whether is bad at bed time but, many many times I've had to scoop these girls up from the pouring rain and dry them before getting them in the coop.
I've just about given up trying..they obviously want to be rebels.
