We got a second batch of Speckled Sussex this year. I intentionally ordered 4 pullets and 2 cockerels because we'd like to try a rooster. We have 4 hens from last season.

I'm amazed at how different the 2 cockerels look already from the pullets. They are 4 weeks old. I have a bunch of pictures but thought maybe someone else would benefit from seeing side by side. When we look at all 6 together it's very clear, despite some of the pullets having larger combs and wattles, which are which.

The cockerel is on the left and a pullet on the right.

This is the cockerel from the first photo. Look at that long neck! His body shape is different.
His feathers are very different than the pullets.

That's him pecking.

This is a pullet. Not sure if she is the same one or not. The body shape is so different.

Bantam Lover, Yes, I' m sure that last one is a pullet but I agree that picture make it questionable. I probably shouldn't have posted it for a good example.

Free Feather: Funny name! I'm hoping my roo with inspire a name. We aren't much for naming our flock but over time they've all come up with their own names. I love my SS. Mine free range too. Now they HATE if I close them into their HUGE yard. Spoiled.

Unfortunately we lost one of the pullets to what we are thinking is a weasel. ARGH! I thought something was stealing eggs for a week or so and then yesterday morning a gutted chick. We did alot of predator proofing for the nursery but not for weasels since we've never seen one around. Spent a good part of yesterday building a new nursery. Unfortunately they are going from 10 x 10 stall to 4 x 6 x 2 hardware cloth box. Poor little dudes have to stay in a large dog crate in the hen coop until we get them a new nursery.

it is so nice to see this side by side comparison! I have a five week old speckled sussex with a large comb no waddles but after seeing these posts it gives me hope that she just has a large comb. thoughts?
