Might be buying a feed store...

A family bought a local feed store here a few years back. They have been struggling to make it. Our nearest TSC is about 25 mins and there are only 2 other feed stores in this area so I don't know what the problem is. It's a shame....they are a nice family and I try to support them as much as possible.

I'd suggest research, research, research. And don't just look at their balance sheets. They can be made to look better than it really is.

We have a feed store for sale up here. It is the only one for an hour's drive.

Go for it but like Thomas said research research research. My husband and I always opt for supporting the little man first. We sell hay for a living and absolutely love our customers

even the picky ones, it's what makes the business fun and challenging.

Exciting stuff! .....but like the other posts have already said do lots of research, go and look at the other feed stores in the area, see what they are selling, is it the same as "your" store Ask the question why are they selling up...ask to look over the old accounts., not just the current year..think what could you do to increase cash flow...what additonal products could you sell within the store to bring custom in.....

Come on we need lots more information before "we" can all make the decision and help you....... if you go for it I wish you all the very very best luck in the world....

I would love to own a feed store or pet store... we have a feedstore/ groc. store for sale down the road from us.... I know they do good business.. the owner moved to colordo because he is tired of the heat... right now he has some people running it for him... I just don't like his prices they are expensive(twice as much on feed as the place I usually get feed) ...

The profit margin is pretty slim and you have to keep quite a bit of inventory on hand. Hard to keep help too. Lot's of backbreaking work. Be realistic about your profit margins when you are mulling it over. Right now in Colorado we have had a really wet spring and the pastures are real green. People are buying a lot less grain and supplement hay than usual and the feed stores are hurting.

Almost a done deal....

I have done a bunch of research on it. Closest feed store is 16 miles away. Would own a "Seminole" feed account. Got people driving 45+ minutes to buy that particular brand.

Turning out around 12 to 15 tons of feed a month.

Business is doing pretty good. It could do a lot better. They dont do any advertising except thier store sign.

They do really good on shelf items like wormers, supplements, and other odd and end horse supplies.

They sell a LOT of chicken feed.
Am thinking of doing a BYC discount on feed and stuff....

Had a meeting with the current owner tonight. Very good meeting.

Will let everyone know what happens....
