Hi I am ordering 26 baby chicks from Murray McMurray Hatchery soon and i want to know how big of a coop I need to have. I want some extra space in case I can get some more. Thanks!

For 30 chickens you will need at least 120sq ft. A 10x12 coop for example. But if you are thinking of getting more, then I would build it quite a bit bigger.

The basic requirements are 4 sq feet per chicken in a coop and 10 sq feet per chicken in a run. More if they will spend more time indoors during winter weather!!

Good Luck!!

I'm confused. I've been reading a lot and have not yet built my coop. I want to have 2-3 laying hens and then I want to buy 20 chicks for meat. Now those 20 will only be around for about 12 weeks and part of the time they'll be little. How much outside run space do I need in this situation?

The permanent residence will only be 2-3 for 20-30 square feet but what about the temporary chickens? Thanks everyone.
