Bossy miss Margery better get to squatting 🤣 !! I'm convinced she's second hen just because none of the other hens wanted to hear her complain! Our top Jen better get to laying, too.. but that's just because she's a good leader and my favorite ;) ive noticed the leg horns (third rank and fourth rank) be more pecky, lately, so 👀. I really expected the ducks to be laying before the hens, but that's what I get for trying to put logic on ducks ;)

Good lord, some of our hens are screamers. I'm used to those sweet soft like cluck cluck clucks, but don't you know it, lately it's been very perturbed "buhWAK buh-WAKK!" Usually followed by someone running full speed, feathers flying, or the distinctive sound of someone falling (jumping) off a roost bar. I tell you, just when you think you have the hens figured out, they start laying!
Top & 2nd probably won't change. It's those coming into their 1st season who tend to shuffle around. A lot of the noise is trying to keep track of the flock to rejoing the group unless you have a rooster, who will then do escort duties. The start of the laying season is always noisy here, as if everyone has forgotten how it goes but it settles down after a while & there are fewer dramatics.

Our roo is not old enough for that unfortunately, but here's some angey hens

Unfortunately Yara didn't get as red as she usually is but I think it still shows. I included a leghorn to show he color I expect to see, which is pink

For comparison purposes I include 2 of my girls coming back on the lay after their winter moult.
The 1st is my black Japanese bantam, Chavi.
The computer does wash out a lot of the colour but I think you can see she is red, not pink. The red against the black is quite striking when she's in full flush.

My Golden Campine, Ha'penny, who's only just begun laying again. Her comb & wattles get nowhere near as bright as Chavi's but they no longer have that faded pink look that a non laying hen has.

Pea combs can be harder to gauge as so little colour shows.

I think your Leghorns have a ways to go yet...🤔 but they're not a breed I've ever kept. How old are they?

Yara looked quite like that red when fully flushed!

A week younger than our Starlights! So, they're coming on/at 14 weeks. I definitely expect them to take a while longer, as they just seem to never stop growing lol
