I had a pullet who was laying outside the coop when she was young. I didn't let her free range until she layed an egg in the coop (nest box). After a few weeks I stopped doing this. No problems anymore for some time…. until a she was becoming becoming (pre-stage). Then she started to make a nest somewhere outside and disappeared overnight. At this point I had to confine her again. Because the eggs were not fertilised.
