That's us!

Hatched out 5 chicks 5 months ago to get a hang of it for a few months, already at 16 and hubby wants more.

Hubby said only 1 coop, already have 3 and I've caught him eyeing a 4th. šŸ˜‚
I have my husband wanting some Brahmas. Iā€™m excited about it but that means making a separate coop for them. We have 18 right know and since they are still inside, when I take them out Iā€™m always doing a head count. I have 6 kids so itā€™s almost habit.

Adding Brahmas and more French Black Marans is going to make it crazy around here. šŸ˜‚ I also told him I wanted some silkies. (Not sure on that one yet) but he agreed. I donā€™t know if he just likes building a coop which is probably not it. He had lumber stuck in his hand from when his drill slipped, he busted a finger wide open and lost same nail from finger in same shot from fencing, oh and he bruised his hand so bad that he thought he broke it. I really think he is just loving the chickens.

:lau My hubby was literally just talking and showing me the Brahma. He likes how massive they look.

Oh my, I couldn't do that many indoors, my max has been 10.

I have 2 little ones so I'm only counting chickens currently. šŸ˜‚

I have a silkie bantam mix and she is so sweet but has only been laying 3 weeks and already broody! Silly girl.

Oh wow, poor guy. So many injuries. My hubby enjoys building so that's how I originally hooked him and now he's picking favorites. šŸ˜‚

šŸ˜‚ My husband said that if we got a Brahma he wanted to name the cockerel ā€œPapa Cockā€. I laughed and then thoughā€¦.ya we probably shouldnā€™t do that. Our 2 younger ones (5&2) would probably go around saying it. Our 2 your old (only boy) is already going around saying it.

I wanted to start out at a small number but we are also the go big or go home ppl šŸ˜‚. Thatā€™s pretty much how we ended up with 6 kids. šŸ˜‚ I remember very faintly the only 2 kid daysā€¦.

I would love silkiesā€¦.I told my husband that I wanted to start with a few females and a male. But the boy would be Elvis, a girl Priscilla, and since they kinda look like Albert Einstein, I would name another Alberta.

It never fails. He always gets hurt. He gets frustrated with things (he is like osd and everything HAS to be perfect) and gets ramy. We built a dugout for a school near us that was all brick. Except the roofā€¦metal. He got ramy and started pounding the metal with his fist to get it to line upā€¦.and well it went in and cut under his knuckle. He is bleeding EVERYWHERE. I try to round up the kids we had with us to go to the ER and he is like ā€œoh no Iā€™m fineā€. Again as blood is pouring out of him. Obviously he didnā€™t die but he has a nice mark from it.

Well, let's see.... 39 hens and 2 roos in the big coop, half of them are 1 year old (red leg bands), the others 2+ years (blue leg bands).

Oh, and then I added to these the "Alpha" hatch (incubator) group, 7 of them, about 10 weeks old (yellow leg bands), 5 cockerels and 2 pullets. They're in the big coop with the grownup bunch and fully integrated.

Okay, then I have the "Beta" group (incubator) of 6 chicks in the playhouse coop, 6 weeks old and ready to go into the schoolhouse area of the big coop. They'll watch the grownups for a few days and get to know some of them, and then graduate to the big flock. I thought there was 1 cockerel and 5 pullets in this group, but this morning not so sure.....

Next, we have "Charlie-A" group of 6 babies, almost 2 weeks old, hatched naturally with their australorp mama in the nursery coop. And there's "Charlie-B" group (incubator) in the basement brooder, 11 little chirpers, about 10 days old. I want to move them out - but I'll have to see if mama australorp will accept them with her bunch, or kick her out so I can add them all together, or move the Betas to the schoolhouse so I can move Charlie-Bs to the playhouse, and mama's Charlie-As can stay with her. What to do???

...And THEN I have 12 more eggs in the 'bator, "Delta" group, due to hatch July 19th. Hope that's enough!

So..... If all goes well, and about half of the chicks are cockerels and half are pullets, and assuming about 2/3 hatching success rate... and expecting to cull maybe 5-6 more old hens and one rooster in the fall...... I'll increase the layer flock to about 53 layers, 3-4 roosters, and 20 whole chickens in the freezer. On average, I've found we consume maybe 2-3 chickens per month. We also grow them for my son and his family. So .... I see that there won't be enough freezer stock! I'll need to process some of the pullets too, or hatch more chicks...

This week, a friend loaned me her 48-egg incubator to test, because she's only had 6 chicks hatch from it in two separate rounds. If I can figure out what's going wrong with it, fix it, and get a good hatch from it...... that should be about 30-36-ish more chickens for the freezer. No, wait.... I promised half of the hatch to my friend, so that's maybe 15-18 for our son's freezer.

Nope. Need more.

See? Chicken math! 39 + 2 + 7 + 6 + 17 - 7 + 20 + 36 - 18 = 45,397.
