It's a very old method. I honestly can't believe we stopped doing it.

Not really, they don't want extra cockerels and checking by opening the body cavity is a surefire way to tell genders. Having an extra cockerel could just result in extra trauma for the pullets who have to endure overbreeding or hormonal outbursts.

If you're experienced you rarely lose a bird. I've heard of losing a few in the beginning, but usually after doing it a couple times the process is much quicker and safer.
Plus if one doesn't make it, it's still edible

Exactly. You're not wasting anything by caponizing, you're preventing future strife in the flock and improving the flavor and texture of your meat.
I've heard that capons are actually really sweet, and while I loved my roos, I'd rather not have to deal with such drama kings in the future.

Interesting. I currently have what I think are 3 cockerels in with 32 pullets (3-4 weeks old). Would like to keep one of them. Also have a flock of 20 1 year old hens. Watching this thread…and thinking as they get hormonal will have to separate, eventually putting the one I think is best in with the older hens. Or maybe test them all out with the hens and see who the big girls prefer. Their instinct is probably better than mine.

I want to learn how to do it too eventually. Figure worst case scenario, I have tiny dinners. Best case scenario, I have big tasty dinners
