I've heard it's more common in bantam breeds. Our silkie used to scream\crow before laying an egg and especially when going into lay from brooding. She'd crow all day like some false alarm egg song and eventually, she'd get the egg out. Then she'd quiet down again leading up to going broody. She's mostly grown out of it at 3 years old, but was the worst when she was still a pullet.

My barred rock is top hen and she has started crowing on occasion. I am in a neighborhood, so it has me a bit worried. She has not exhibited other rooster qualities. She does not guard the others and she always eats first. :)
